
OVERVIEW
LEISTON head to Walsham-le-Willows on Tuesday night in the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup Second Round.
Leiston departed the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday at the hands of Banbury United, going down 3-0, and will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
Walsham-le-Willows are 11th currently in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, winning three, losing three and drawing three of their nine league games so far. They had a good win at home to Ipswich Wanderers last Saturday, winning 5-1.
Joao Rangel has gone to play for his national side in the Asia Cup so is unavailable but everyone else should be fit for the cup tie.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
LEISTON and Walsham-le-Willows last met in the league at Summer Road on Wednesday 16th March 2011, with the Blues winning 2-1, with goalkeeper Jamie Stannard being sent off and Neil Calver going in goal. David Head and Gareth Heath scored the Blues goals while A.Cusack netted for the hosts.
The sides met in the Suffolk and Ipswich League for many years before both were promoted to the Eastern Counties League, although both clubs only played each other at Step 5 (Eastern Counties Premier).
The teams first played each other at Step 5 at Walsham-le-Willows on Wednesday 10th October, 2007, in front of 84 spectators. Walsham won 3-2. Lee McGlone and Blake Saker scored for Leiston while N.Gooderham, S.Logan and G.Ross netted for the hosts.
The following season, in 2008/2009, Walsham won 1-0 in North Suffolk on Wednesday 25th March 2009, with A.Ross scoring.
Leiston for their first league win the following season, winning 4-1 on Wednesday 16th September 2009. Goals from Stuart Boardley, Michael Brothers, Danny Cunningham and Marc Lowe saw Carl Chenery’s team to three points.
Outside of league action, the two teams met in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on Sunday 20th August, 2006, with Leiston winning 4-1 in front of 201 people.
Leiston and Walsham last met in the Suffolk Premier Cup in November 2014, with the Blues winning 4-0 at Victory Road. Gareth Heath (2), Connor Hubble and Tom Winter were the scorers. This was at the quarter-final stage. The Blues went on to lose 2-1 against Bury Town in the semi-finals at AFC Sudbury FC.
This is only the third game of the Suffolk Premier Cup this season. Other than Leiston’s win at Lowestoft Town in Round One, Ipswich Town versus Hadleigh United was the other match to be played, which saw Ipswich Town win 2-1.
The fourth game of this season’s competition takes place on Wednesday evening, when Mildenhall Town host Bury Town in Round 2.
Leiston have another cup game in the form of the Isuzu FA Trophy on Saturday when they head to Sussex to face Lewes (3pm kick off).
