LEISTON bowed out of the FA Cup after a three-goal scoring spree in nine first-half minutes at the Flannery Stadium saw visitors Guiseley to victory, writes Craig Cooper.
Elliott Owen (32), Jordan Thewlis (38) and Jack Emmett (41) sealed the deal for the Yorkshire-based team as shell-shocked Leiston found themselves three-down at the interval. And, despite a better second half from the Blues, Guiseley stood firm to book their place in the First Round, the draw of which is on Monday evening.
Wyatt Hill and Joe Henman came in for the injured Eddie Jackson and Jude Frostick, who dropped to the bench for Leiston. Mike Ford came into the squad as cover for Callum Robinson.
Leiston began well and Cameron Rayworth’s cross from the right went out of play before Seb Dunbar’s delivery was easy for keeper Jack Hall.
Guiseley's first real sight of goal came on 16 minutes when Thewlis got into the box but Rayworth made a good challenge.
Robinson made a smart stop just before the half hour when he tipped the ball around his left hand post from left back Oliver Brown. The ball into the box was headed away by Noel Aitkens from the corner before Thewlis headed the resultant ball back into the area wide of Robinson’s post.
With the away side growing into the game, Guiseley took the lead on 32 minutes when Owen headed home from Harrison Hopper’s corner.
Moments after the restart, Blues captain Seb Dunbar went off injured and was immediately replaced by Ben Batho.
The loss of skipper, Dunbar, was a blow to Leiston and Guiseley doubled their lead when Thewlis shot home from close range. Two minutes later, Emmett made it three after Kyle Callan-McFadden had tackled well inside the Blues box only for the ball to come back to the Guiseley man who made no mistake.
In the second half, Hopper headed just over from a corner on 49 minutes. Just before the hour mark, Hopper’s delivery on the edge of the Blues box went into Robinson’s bottom left hand corner but referee Joseph Dann-Pye saw an infringement and ruled the goal out.
Blues sub Harvey Sayer cut inside on 65 minutes and struck a shot that Jack Hall had to be alert to and tip the ball away to safety, minutes later, Adam Mills’ good left wing cross was met by Frostick but Hall made a good save on the goal line.
Robinson saved Hopper’s free kick on 80 minutes as time started to tick down and Leiston thought they had a goal back on 85 minutes as Adam Marriott headed home Mills’ cross but the flag was up for offside.
Substitute Will Longbottom went close late on for Guiseley as the game came to a close and the visitors pocketed the near £10K prize money.
