Blues play off dreams hanging by a thread following defeat to Suffolk rivals

Leiston came into this game on the back of a narrow defeat to Leatherhead on Saturday writes Craig Cooper. Leon Ottley-Gooch remained sidelined while Daniel Cunningham started the first of a three match suspension, so Darren Mills started in his place. Josh Mayhew came into the squad to start on the bench while Toby Kerslake was called up to replace the injured Joe Francis in a match sponsored by Mssrs Bailey, Challis and Spall. The game started at a good pace with Bury playing for pride and Leiston trying to push for a spot in the play-offs. Leiston were causing Bury some problems in the first couple of minutes with the Bury defence being pegged back and the away side clearing a couple of early corners. After fifteen minutes Sands got down the left only to be hauled down by the Bury defender. At first, the penalty wasn’t given however, the linesman raised his flag and the referee pointed to the spot giving out a yellow card to the offender. The normally ever reliable Gareth Heath then stepped up to hit his spot kick to Archer’s left hand side only to see the keeper claw it away and the rebound was put over the bar from Patrick Brothers although this was a hard chance. Just five minutes later and things would go from bad to worse for Leiston as captain Tom Bullard was adjudged to have elbowed a Bury defender when coming up for a throw in. This suddenly turned the game in Bury’s favour and Leiston were now the team on the back foot. There was a lot of niggly fouls that were being given away by both teams and Leiston were now finding it hard to get Sands into the game. The goal would come for Bury when Leiston failed to clear a corner and Justin Miller smashed past Gay to put the away side in front. Sands would have a shot turned behind by Archer shortly after the restart and Sands again went down the left before half time only for the ball to evade Mills. The last significant action of the half came from a Leiston corner and Patrick Brothers could not divert the ball in when well place with the Bury defender doing enough to put him off.

No changes were made by the sides at the break and it was Bury who had the first real shot when a great run by Connor Hall was well blocked by Jefford. A lot of play would be in midfield second half with neither side really testing either keeper. The Bury defence were dealing with long balls or crosses that came into the box. Leiston’s creative players, the likes of Heath, Brothers and Hubble, were finding it hard to get into the game with Bury stifling the midfield in the latter stages of the half. With the referee signalling four minutes of added on time at the end of the game Leiston nearly scored in the third of these with Jefford heading Boardley’s corner back across goal and Mayhew meeting his header well but Archer made a cracking save to tip the ball round the post for another corner. Soon after the full time whistle sounded in what looks like putting an end to Leiston’s play-off hopes.
