OVERVIEW
LEISTON head to Biggleswade Town tonight in Southern League Premier Division Central action (7.45pm kick off) looking to bounce back from the 3-4 defeat to Barwell at the weekend that dented the Blues play-off hopes.
This is the first time the two teams have met this season with the original date scheduled for Saturday 7th December postponed because the Bedfordshire side were in FA Trophy action. The game was re-scheduled for the end of January but the game was postponed again due to a waterlogged pitch.
It has been a tough season for Biggleswade in the league. They have lost their last four league games and have 20 points from their 33 league games so far, and are currently 19 points from safety. However, their season was bolstered by a tremendous FA Trophy run earlier in the season. Biggleswade won four games in the competition after beating Marlow (away, 1-0), Potters Bar Town (home, 2-0), Coleshill Town (away, 5-4), AFC Totton (home, 1-1, won 3-2 on pens) before bowing out 3-0 home to Oxford City.
Leiston, meanwhile, are down to 8th in the Southern League Central Premier division table, and are now six points off the play-offs. The league is still tight, however, and there will be likely more twists and turns as the division enters the last six weeks of the season.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS IN BEDFORDSHIRE
LEISTON won on their first-ever visit to Biggleswade Town in March 2019. Trailing late on in the game, Rob Eagle scored a penalty before Will Davies scored in injury time to beat ‘The Waders’ 2-1.
The scheduled away game in the 2019/2020 campaign was postponed due to Covid, before in the 2020/2021 season, Biggleswade won 7-4 (in September 2020). Will Davies, Liam Jackson (2) and an own goal from the hosts were the Blues scorers on the evening. This came exactly one week after Leiston had beaten Biggleswade Town 5-1 in the FA Cup at home.
Jake Hutchings and Adam Mills scored for Leiston in October 2021 as the Blues fought back from two goals down but they went on to lose 3-2. That proved the teams last meeting as Biggleswade were relegated that season.
