LEISTON fought back twice to keep their unbeaten run intact, as St Ives Town ran them close at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium on Tuesday night.
Twice the visitors from Cambridgeshire took the lead, once just before the break through Amir Hadi, with Joshua Allen netting with 20 minutes to go.
However, on both occasions the Blues equalised, firstly through Jamar Loza (53) and then Ben Fowkes (77), as the Leiston picked up another point and got ever-closer the play-off spots in the Southern League Premier Central division. The result made it six unbeaten now for the Blues and just one defeat in 11 in all competitions.
On a cold, damp evening, Leiston almost took the lead early, just as they did at Stamford on Saturday.
Fraser Alexander's cross from the right was met by Albie Albin, but Daniel Wilks in the home goal saved well. Leiston won their first corner in the 9th minute that saw Cameron Rayworth's header fly straight at Wilks, before Wilks was in action again, taking Alexander's free-kick well.
It had been a positive start by Chris Wigger's side, as they looked for their sixth clean sheet, as well as win on the bounce. Fowkes had a shot blocked before Alexander's dangerous free-kick evaded everyone in the St Ives Town penalty area.
Slowly, the hosts got into the game. Jernade Meade's strike was pushed onto the bar by Leiston 'keeper Marcus Mehew, while the visitors then saw a header cleared off the line.
At the other end Fowkes and George Quantrell both had efforts, but three minutes before the break the deadlock was broken.
And it was Hadi who got the opener for the visitors, pouncing from close range after a good save by Mehew.
St Ives Town won an early corner in the second period, but it was the Blues who struck to equalise, Loza's left-footed strike from 15 yards flying into the net.
The game was up for grabs again now and Loza had an effort just go over the bar, while St Ives Town skipper, Alexander Collard, headed just wide of Mehew's post.
The visitors had a good spell, with two corners and their pressure paid off in the 71st-minute, when Allen's shot put St Ives Town ahead.
But again, Leiston came back at their opponents, and six minutes later, Fowkes was on hand from an angle to shoot home from six yards to draw the game level again.
Loza's late effort was brilliantly saved by Wilks as the Blues looked for the perfect comeback, but it wasn't to be and both sides settled for a point.
