KYRAN Clements struck a 90th-minute winner as the Blues produced another outstanding performance on the road, this time at Bromsgrove Sporting.
Clements leapt highest at Fraser Alexander's late corner to seal a 1-0 victory for the Blues against a Sporting side who had gone seven games unbeaten in the league. It sent the Leiston fans in the near 800 crowd delirious with delight as their team again showed their mettle on a big stage.
It was a repeat performance of Clements doing the exact same thing in an FA Cup clash against Hornchurch at Victory Road earlier in the season to earn the Blues a replay - a replay they won to set up a clash with Dagenham & Redbridge.
But it was three league points he sealed on Saturday for the Blues, with the win moving Leiston up to ninth in the Southern League Premier Central table, four points off the play-offs, and followed up their fine 1-0 victory over Stratford Town two weeks ago.
"It was a top result," Blues head coach Lee Norfolk said after the game.
"It was a well disciplined performance, we had good spells of possession and played a lot in their half, first half. We tried to defend by being brave and keeping the ball as much as possible, and be compact without it. And we defended well when we needed to.
"We knew we'd get chances if we could keep a clean sheet. And we took one of them. For the boys to be as dogged as they were was pleasing."
On a dry but cold afternoon in Bromsgrove, the Blues went into the game without Eddie Jackson (still recovering from a concussion) and Ish Fatadjo (unavailable).
Wyatt Hill was fit enough to start, while a very young bench included youngsters Ben Batho, Cameron Rayworth and Ethan Oldman, with Stanley Horne welcomed into the first team squad for the first time after impressing for the U18s and U23s.
Bromsgrove began well and come forward early on, with Billy Shaw looking lively on the hosts' left flank. Blues 'keeper Billy Johnson parried James Meddows’ effort on the edge of the box out to Shaw but the keeper did well to react and make a good block from the follow-up effort.
The Blues first attempt on the Bromsgrove goal came in the eighth minute when Jamar Loza crossed from Leiston’s right after cutting inside but Charles Price took his effort easily in the home goal.
Albie Armin won the ball in midfield and threaded a ball across the park to Loza, with the Blues player driving into the box and seeing his effort blocked by a home defender. The home side had a great chance to take the lead on 19 minutes. Full back Aksum White made a great run at the Blues defence to cross into the middle but Theo Robinson put the ball wide from six yards.
Halfway through the first 45, Ben Fowkes ran at Bromsgrove and the ball was turned behind for a corner. Price claimed the kick and won a free kick in the process. Leiston continued to defend well, with Alexander heading away a corner and Johnson palming away.
Loza then did excellently on the Blues right and crossed well into the box but Armin headed the ball just over the bar. In the 35th minute, Johnson did well to push out a corner and from the resultant ball back into the box, Reece King headed straight at Johnson in another good chance for the home team.
Johnson saved Shaw’s shot on 37 minutes before setting up a move with Loza getting at Bromsgrove again down the Blues right but Price gathered his cross easily.
Leiston restricted Bromsgrove as the half petered out, with Clements heading wide of Price’s post in the last action of the half.
Shaw got down the Blues right 90 seconds into the second half but Johnson dealt with his cross, before Blues defender Rossi Jarvis then had to be replaced by Ollie Saunders after picking up a knock, which meant Clements dropped back into the back line.
On 53 minutes, Loza crossed from Leiston’s right-hand side but Armin couldn’t nod the ball into the goal from close range. Leiston then enjoyed good possession and were frustrating Bromsgrove more than they had in the first half before, in the 63rd minute, Clements’ shot was well blocked before the defender headed over from Dunbar’s ball.
Bromsgrove had a glorious chance to take the lead on 69 minutes, as Meddows got behind the Blues defence but he saw his attempt narrowly go wide. Seb Dunbar made a great challenge in the box but Luke Rowe won the ball back to square to sub Newall, as Johnson grabbed the ball to save the day.
Hill was booked and then substituted along with Ben Fowkes, with Rayworth and Batho coming on. On 86 minutes, Loza crossed from the left byline but a Bromsgrove player won the challenge in the box, with the ball ballooning up in the air for Price to take.
Batho lost the ball in midfield but recovered well to win it back, and Loza’s late effort was deflected just wide of Price’s right-hand post as the minutes ticked down and both sides looked for a winner.
And the resultant corner saw the winner arrive in the 90th minute for Leiston. Alexander whipped in a brilliant ball and Clements rose highest in the box to nod past Price.
With the game heading into the seventh minute of added-on time, Bromsgrove won a header from a free-kick but the ball fell into the arms of Johnson who smothered and the Blues celebrated a super victory and performance.
