ISMAEL Fatadjo struck in the first half as Leiston picked up a deserved point against Alvechurch on Saturday.
Fatadjo pounced in the box to give the Blues an 18th-minute lead. However, Daniel Sweeney netted a fine 57th-minute equaliser for the home side, as both teams picked up a point from a game both had hoped for the maximum three. The result leaves Leiston four points off the final play-off place.
An impressive first-half from the Blues saw them create enough chances to put the game to bed. However, it wasn't to be and Chris Wigger's men now look forward to welcoming joint leaders Bedford Town to Victory Road on Saturday.
Club captain Seb Dunbar was suspended for Leiston, while Cameron Rayworth joined Ollie Yun and Wyatt Hill on the sidelines on a warm afternoon.
The Blues started well, with Fatadjo and Adam Mills having early chances, before Leiston did take the lead on 18 minutes when good perseverance by Rossi Jarvis allowed Leiston to win the ball back and Fatadjo smashed home from twelve yards.
Two minutes later, and Fatadjo and Jamar Loza linked up well, with the latter firing just over Ben Cisse’s crossbar.
Mills shot over when placed and then just before the break had another good opportunity occurred when Mills shot wide at an angle with Ben Fowkes and George Quantrell waiting on the six yard area.
The second half was more even and the hosts levelled on 57 minutes when Daniel Sweeney turned and shot from distance into Blues custodian Billy Johnson’s right hand corner.
The home side put some good deliveries into the Leiston area while Loza had a couple of efforts deflected wide as time ticked down.
With ten minutes remaining of normal time, Kyran Clements nearly saved the day again but was denied by a great Cisse save while on 87 minutes at the other end, Johnson palmed Joseph Willis’ strike round his left hand post as both teams had to settle for a point.
