TWO goals from Adam Mills and one from Kryan Clements saw Leiston to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Banbury Town on Saturday.
The Blues were well worth the three points in a game they mastered well in windy conditions.
Clements struck on 11 minutes, after the visitors had made a decent enough start. Mills got down the left and his cross into the box was flicked home by the No. 5 – his 10th goal of the season.
It remained that way at the break, but two goals in six minutes from Mills, firstly a strike from just inside the area on 54 minutes that comfortably beat Jack Harding in the Banbury goal, was followed by a power header at the back post from a Fraser Alexander corner on the hour mark.
The win keeps the Blues in ninth place in the Southern League Premier Central table, still five points off the play-offs after Stamford’s late winner over Bishop’s Stortford. However, the home fans were given a treat on Saturday, as three under-18s were introduced for their first-team debuts late on.
The Blues have a big week ahead, with the Suffolk Premier Cup final against Felixstowe & Walton, at Needham Market on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Stourbridge next Saturday.
Blues boss Chris Wigger made three changes to his starting XI with Seb Dunbar, Jack Manly and Ryan Jarvis coming in for Cameron Rayworth (hand injury), Ben Fowkes (unavailable) and Rossi Jarvis. Wyatt Hill came back into the 16 with under-18s youngster Stan Horne also coming into the side.
Blues keeper Billy Johnson had to be alert to turn over a header on just two minutes before Alexander Prosser shot well wide moments later.
Mills had a shot blocked on ten minutes but just 60 seconds later, good play by him saw him cross from the left and Clements put the ball home from eight yards to score his tenth of the campaign.
Mills was put through on goal by George Quantrell on 17 minutes but the assistant referee had his flag raised for offside.
Leiston captain Seb Dunbar worked Harding on 20 minutes before Johnson made a good save from close-range just past the half hour mark for the Blues and Eddie Jackson did well to steer the ball off the line and out of play.
On 40 minutes, Jack Manly, who had a good game throughout, went through on goal one-on-one but was denied by Harding.
Just before the break, Johnson made another decent save to his left with Jackson winning a free kick for a foul on the by-line.
Leiston doubled their lead on 54 minutes. Good hold up play by Clements saw him get the ball to Mills, and he stroked the ball into Harding’s bottom left-hand corner.
The game was made safe six minutes later when Mills, at the heart of much of Leiston's forward play, headed home Alexander’s corner.
Leiston boss Wigger handed three young players their debut as the game progressed. Stan Horne, Ewan Parlett and Billy Jordan were all brought on, but chances for both teams dried up. In the 74th minute, Horne did well to cross from the right and Clements won a corner while Quantrell got into the box but was denied by a good challenge on 79 minutes.
