LEISTON ended their league season on a losing note, after Biggleswade Town took all the points in a 3-2 victory at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium, writes Craig Cooper
The Blues were on the backfoot from the off, going behind to Marcus Goulbourne’s fifth-minute goal after the Blues gifted the Waders, who were already relegated, possession.
George Quantrell equalised for Leiston on 15 minutes, but again the home side went behind, Keon Lewis-Burgess heading home after the Blues again lost possession.
It was 2-2 before half-time however, Ben Fowkes finishing well from close range. But despite that, Leiston never kicked on, in front of almost 500 fans, and it was the visitors who won only their fifth game of the campaign when Obi Onyeagwara netted a fine individual effort.
The result left Leiston in 10th place in the Southern League Premier Central division table. The Blues ended with two wins in their last 12 league games after a hugely promising start to the New Year.
Adam Mills fired over from a free-kick after just three minutes but it was the visitors who took the lead when a mix up in the home defence allowed Gouldbourbe to nip in and round Billy Johnson to net.
Leiston levelled though when Eddie Jackson won a challenge and Albie Armin burst forward to feed Fowkes, whose strike was tipped onto the post by Jack Berman but Quantrell was on hand to net the loose ball and score his 19th goal of the season.
Kyran Clements put over from close range on 22 minutes while Biggleswade had a goal disallowed.
On 40 minutes, the away side took the lead again when Lewis-Burgess headed home at the back post. However, Fowkes netted his 12th goal of the season on 44 minutes after good play by Quantrell and Fraser Alexander as the home side hit back.
Chances were hard to come by by both teams on the second half. Quantrell went close on 50 minutes but both defence’s mainly stayed on top.
It was the away side to take the lead in the 70th minute when Obidinma Onyeagwara got behind the Leiston defence to fire home from an acute angle.
Leiston forced some late corners but Biggleswade defended well as the Blues look forward to a 14th season at Step 3 next season.
