JOAO Rangel struck early as Leiston picked up a point at Worcester City on Saturday, writes Craig Cooper.
The Timor-Leste international picked up a quick free-kick from Fraser Alexander in the fourth minute. He strode forward before unleashing a 20-yard shot that flew into the bottom corner of Harley Price's net.
It was a lead the Blues held until the 55th-minute when they allowed the home side to cross through the Blues six-yard box and Liam Lockett was on hand to shoot home from close range.
The point meant Leiston dropped to 9th in what was their seventh draw of the league season. However, only leaders Harborough have lost less games than the Blues.
Chris Wigger made four changes to the starting XI as Wyatt Hill came in at right back, due to Cameron Rayworth being injured, while Adam Mills, Ryan Jarvis and Willie Clemons came back into the starting XI in place of Jack Manly, Jude Frostick and Ronnie Blois, who took their place on the substitutes bench. Max Crane, who has impressed for the U23s this season, took his place on the bench also.
Leiston started well and Ben Fowkes’ early cross found Rangel and Leiston won a free kick just outside the box. Alexander took the free kick quickly and passed the ball to Rangel who shot home.
Worcester responded and quickly won a corner before the Blues cleared but then lost possession again, however, Eddie Jackson was back to make a good tackle. In the 12th minute, the Blues won a corner of their own but Fowkes’ strike was blocked.
Leiston dealt with a couple of shots by the hosts while on 21 minutes, Rangel broke away but the Blues player's cross was dealt with.
In the 26th minute, Billy Johnson took a cross and set up an attack but Price was out to meet the ball ahead of Mills. A minute later, and the lively Lockett curled just wide of Johnson’s post after a good move from Worcester.
Worcester had a header go over a minute into the second period while, on 48 minutes, Alexander and Clemons linked up well in the centre of the pitch to release Rangel but his cross went wide of incoming Blues players.
Play was halted for a couple of minutes as Hill and a Worcester player received treatment after colliding and, on 55 minutes, the home team levelled through Lockett.
Kyle Callan-McFadden and Seb Dunbar received yellow cards while the home side thought they had taken the lead on 65 minutes but the offside flag was raised. A minute later and Clemons ran at the home defence but shot at Price just outside the area.
Sub Ronnie Blois and Clemons were denied by good defending from the hosts as chances late on were again hard to come by from both teams.
Leiston return to home comforts next weekend as they welcome Stamford to the Flannery Stadium.
