OVERVIEW

LEISTON are on their travels this weekend when they head to Lincolnshire to face Stamford writes Craig Cooper.

The Blues 1-1 draw against Stratford Town last weekend means that Chris Wigger’s side are now 10th, but there is still a lot to play as the season ventures into the last six weeks of the campaign.

There are no injury doubts ahead of the match for the Blues, aside from Harvey Sayer who has a broken wrist.

Stamford are third from bottom but have picked up seven points in their last five league games. Overall, they have taken 30 points from 31 games and are just two points outside the relegation places now.

Earlier on in the season, Leiston beat Stamford 3-0 in Suffolk. Two Adam Mills goals and an Eddie Jackson goal helped the Blues to three points on Saturday, 15th November 2025.

MEET THE HOSTS

JUST under 21,000 people live in Stamford (2021 Census).

The place-name Stamford is first attested in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, where it appears as Steanford in 922 and Stanford in 942. It appears as Stanford in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name means "stony ford".

The Stamford Mercury claims to be 'Britain's oldest continuously published newspaper title'. The Mercury has been published since 1712 but its masthead formerly claimed it was established in 1695 and still has "Britain's Oldest Newspaper".

The films Pride and Prejudice (2005), The Da Vinci Code (2006) and The Golden Bowl (2000) were all partly filmed in Stamford.

In 2024 Stamford was named as one of the best places to live in the UK, by the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

THE FOOTBALL TEAM

STAMFORD AFC were established in 1896 and they play at the Zeeco Stadium.

They are nicknamed ‘The Daniels’ and are managed by Graham Drury while David Whitby is the Chairman.

Last season, the Lincolnshire club came 6th as they just missed out on a play-off place.

In their early seasons in the late 1890’s and early 20th century, the club played in the Midlands League leaving the league and playing in the Peterborough & District League between 1939 and 1946.

They won their respective Midlands League in 1975-1976 and League Cup and also reached the final of the FA Vase but lost 1-0 to Billericay Town after extra time.

After winning the league in 1978, they won it three consecutive seasons in a row between 1980 and 1982 and won the FA Vase in 1980 where they beat Guisborough Town 2-0 but they lost in the final in 1984, losing 3-2 to Stansted.

They reached the First Round of the FA Cup in 2016/2017, beating Wrexham along the way, while they won the Northern Premier League Midlands Division One in 2022/2023 and have played their third season currently in the Southern League Central Premier.
