Ronnie leaves it late as Blues snatch all three points

Ronnie leaves it late as Blues snatch all three points

Michael Bacon12 Apr - 12:46

Quorn 1 Leiston 2

RONNIE BLOIS slotted home a stoppage-time winner as Leiston picked up a terrific three points on the road once more, this time at Quorn, writes Craig Cooper.

Blois was put through in the final seconds by Seb Dunbar and he took his opportunity to make in 2-1 to Leiston, in a game the Blues played well in throughout.

Leiston had gone ahead on 31 minutes, Joao Rangel cutting in and curling a delicious left-foot shot into the top corner.

However, the home side equalised with just 16 minutes left through Jack Duffy.

Not that the visitors were to be denied as Blois struck, sending the visiting support delirious with delight.

With Albie Armin (injured) and Wyatt Hill (suspended), Chris Wigger was enforced into changes and brought Ben Batho into the starting line-up, along with Jude Frostick. Jack Manly, Ryan Jarvis and Ewan Parlett all took their place on the substitutes bench.

The game started in good conditions in bright sunshine, but the weather changed throughout the afternoon and it became windy at times in the second period.

Kyle Callan-McFadden cut out a ball over the top in the early stages while on five minutes, Adam Mills crossed from the left flank which Blois couldn’t get on the end of.

Billy Johnson saved well from a chance after a corner although the flag was raised for offside before on eight minutes, Frostick put in Willie Clemons but the Blues player shot wide of Adam Harrison’s right hand post.

Billy Kee’s shot was then blocked well by Eddie Jackson before, in the 14th minute, Simeon Cobourne could have given Quorn the lead but dragged his strike just wide of Johnson’s right hand upright.

Mills had a shot deflected wide just after the midway point in the first half while on 28 minutes, Batho’s ball out found Clemons who in turn played in Rangel, whose cross was blocked for a corner.

Leiston did take the lead though on 31 minutes. Mills' superb cross-field pass found Rangel on the right and the midfielder cut inside to send an unstoppable shot from just outside the box into Harrison’s top right-hand corner.

After the restart, Zak Goodson shot just wide of Johnson’s post before Johnson did well to punch away a home corner. At the end of the half, Johnson saved a low shot to his left before Dunbar did well to clear the loose ball away for a corner.

After the interval, Mills shot wide for Leiston, before Callan-McFadden made a good block in the box five minutes later and Blois shot just over on 57 minutes after good build up play from Leiston.

In the 61st minute, Rangel forced Harrison to push the ball over the crossbar as Mills had been fouled on the edge of the penalty area.

Quorn were looking lively themselves coming forward but Leiston were containing them to few shots on goal. On 65 minutes, Rangel’s cross, again an excellent one, was nearly turned in by Frostick. Leiston had another chance which saw Mills shot just wide before Quorn levelled on 74 minutes.

A free kick into the area wasn’t dealt with and substitute Jack Duffy made no mistake to dispatch the ball past Johnson and into the keeper’s bottom corner.

Two minutes after the restart, Clemons nearly put Leiston back ahead but Harrison was down well to his shot.

On 78 minutes, Johnson made a great reaction save down low to his right before Luke Cox hit the bar with a header a minute later for the home side. With Quorn feeling they had to win the game, Leiston had numerous chances in the last ten minutes.

Mills had a chance from a corner that was cleared off the line on 85 minutes before the same player forced Harrison into a good save as stoppage time approached.

On 92 minutes, Harrison again done well to prevent Blois in front of goal while Mills shot wide twice.

With the game looking to be heading for a draw, the ball fell to Dunbar and the captain brilliantly found Blois with the outside of his left foot and the striker ran through on goal to shoot low and hard into Harrison’s bottom corner to give Leiston all three points, with referee Michael Pattison signalling the end of the match almost immediately to send Leiston supporters home jubilant.
