Three goals and three points as Blues beat Stortford

Three goals and three points as Blues beat Stortford

Michael Bacon

Leiston 3 Bishop's Stortrford 1

LEISTON put in a polished first home performance of the season and picked up their first three points into the bargain, writes Craig Cooper.

Goals from man-of-the-match Willie Clemons, Harvey Sayer and Adam Mills were enough to see off a Bishop's Stortford side who halved the deficit when the Blues were 2-0 up, Tyrone Baker netting a 65th minute penalty for the visitors.

Mills scored his goal late on to seal the deal for Chris Wigger's side in a match where they deserved all the points.

Blues boss, Wigger, brought new signing Joe Henman into the starting XI in place of Ryan Jarvis, who dropped to the bench, in an otherwise unchanged team and squad after Saturday’s 1-1 draw in Leicestershire against Anstey Nomads.

Leiston began well, Seb Dunbar’s early cross caught away keeper Max Woodford out on seven minutes, with the cross landing on top of the custodian’s crossbar.

A minute later, and Frank Norris got in on goal at the opposing end for the away team and forced Callum Robinson to tip the ball over his crossbar, before the Leiston 'keeper commanded his area and came to claim the resultant corner.

A corner into the Blues box in the 13th minute saw Mills connect and his shot was blocked away for a corner but Leiston would hit the front four minutes later.

The ball was worked into the path of Sayer on the Blues right flank and his pin-point cross saw Clemons come onto the ball and have time to control the pass and smash past Woodford, giving the keeper no chance and put Leiston a goal up.

Three minutes later and Eddie Jackson made a good challenge on the halfway line to thwart the visitors from progressing any further up the pitch, while on 23 minutes, Kyle Callan-McFadden made a good block to keep out an effort on Robinson’s goal. Then, just a minute later, Bradley Russell shot just over when well placed for Bishop’s Stortford.

Clemons shot just over before the half time mark after winning a challenge well in midfield while in the second minute of additional time, Joe Henman shot at Woodford.

However, in the last action of the half, Mills won a tackle on the halfway line and got down the Blues left to deliver to Sayer in the penalty area who made no mistake to volley past Woodford and double the Blues advantage.

Two minutes after the interval, Mills was denied from Woodford after the 'keeper made a great instinctive save, before Clemons’ follow up shot was blocked.

In the 57th minute, Sayer was just wide of Woodford’s right hand upright from the edge of the box before Bishop’s Stortford had a decent bit of play themselves and they pulled a goal back on 65 minutes.

Callan-McFadden fouled in the box to allow Baker to step up and put the ball into Robinson’s bottom right hand corner. On 74 minutes, an away free kick flashed just wide of the far post before Callan-McFadden made an excellent defensive block from close range, as the visitors threatened an equaliser.

However, Leiston got their mojo back and in the 80th minute, Frostick shot over the bar and then the Blues made the game safe on 84 minutes.

Another well worked moved saw Clemons get down the Blues left and centre the ball to Mills who made no mistake, firing home left-footed.

Leiston saw the game out without no more shots on their goal, although Eddie Jackson did well to head away a cross into the Blues area in the first minute of five additional minutes.
