LEISTON went down for a third time in the League at the Flannery Stadium as they went down 3-1 to Alvechurch, writes Craig Cooper.
Two early Miracle Okafor goals in the first 20 minutes put Alvechurch in control before Harvey Sayer quickly pulled a Leiston goal back. George Forsyth’s header after the hour mark once again doubled the away side’s advantage as the away side went on the claim the three points.
The defeat means the Blues drop down a place to 15th in the league table as they failed to build on their fine victory at Peterborough Sports on Tuesday night.
On a wonderful day for football, with mild weather and still conditions, Chris Wigger kept the same side from that 5-2 win at Peterborough, while Kyle Callan-McFadden returned to the squad in place of Liam Shaw.
Adam Mills had a chance after just five minutes but Redman Evans made a good save in the away goal. Eddie Jackson’s header was saved by Evans from a corner a couple of minutes later before Alvechurch took the lead on 12 minutes.
Ofakor got behind the Blues defence and Robinson saved at the feet of the player before the striker got away and put into an empty net. Midfielder Jamey Osborne had to be replaced by the away side shortly afterwards through injury and Jonny Ngandu came on to replace him.
The ‘Church’ doubled their lead on 19 minutes after the Blues lost the ball at the back and Ofakor got into the box to shoot home.
Leiston pulled a goal back almost immediately when Harvey Sayer ran at the away defence and after his original shot was blocked, Sayer struck the rebound into Evans’ bottom left hand corner.
Evans did well to claw away Mills’ cross as the Blues pressed for a leveller. Leiston had to clear away three corners at the end of the half before defender Jackson went off with a hamstring problem and Callan-McFadden replaced him.
Ben Stephens tested Robinson six minutes after the break while Sayer attempted to lob Evans but the keeper got back to save.
Nick Clayton-Phillips was denied by a fine save by Robinson on 62 minutes but from the corner, Alvechurch captain George Forsyth headed home at the back post to bet a third for the visitors.
Alvechurch defended well and made it hard for the Blues to get back in the game late on. Okafor nearly got his hat-trick on 70 minutes but Robinson was out well to save well again.
Sub Tope Obadeyi nearly got on the scoresheet late on while Fraser Alexander shot at Evans in the fourth minute of stoppage time as the game came to an end.
