LEISTON succumbed to a Bromsgrove Sporting side high on confidence, as the hosts remain third in the league table while Leiston slip to 16th.
In truth, Leiston didn’t do a lot wrong in this match and there was a lot of action at each end, but the two goal lead that Bromsgrove secured after half an hour ultimately proved to be the difference and it was too much of a mountain to climb in the end for Leiston.
Leiston brought in Kyle Callan-McFadden, Joao Rangel and Jude Frostick into the starting XI, while Eddie Jackson started on the bench. Noel Aitkens was injured and Willie Clemons was suspended but Blues club captain Seb Dunbar returned to help booster the squad.
Leiston started well, spraying the ball around from midfield into wide areas.
Callum Robinson took an early cross inside the Blues box while on four minutes, Rangel shot just outside the box and Tony Breedon made a flying save to his right to deny the Blues midfielder. Robinson took another delivery on eight minutes but the hosts took the lead on nine minutes.
Leiston lost the ball in possession and the ball was worked to Billy Shaw who made no mistake in despatching the ball past Robinson and into the top left hand corner.
Jake Jervis then tried an effort just outside the area while on 17 minutes, Shaw’s attempt was saved by Robinson after a good move from Bromsgrove. Leiston quickly broke upfield and Adam Marriott shot wide in the box.
On 23 minutes, Jervis headed over at the back post while a minute later, Adam Mills headed over Sayer’s corner, the ball just going over Breedon’s crossbar.
But, the home side doubled their lead on 32 minutes. A corner to the back post was headed back across and Kieron Freeman headed home from six yards to make it two.
Leiston were then forced into a sub, with Dunbar replacing Marriott, and the Blues player nearly got on the end of his own cross when the Bromsgrove defender misjudged the ball and Breedon had to make a top save once again.
Eight minutes into the second period, Brad Bood suffered a bad injury when colliding with Cameron Rayworth and medical help from both sides rushed onto the pitch to help immediately.
The game was held up for seven minutes as the player was stretchered off and an ambulance was called. After play restarted, Bromsgrove took the corner and the header was wide.
On 63 minutes, Robinson saved from Jervis before the Blues pulled a goal back six minutes later. Mills intercepted a Bromsgrove defender in possession and he set up Sayer who made no mistake to notch into Breedon’s bottom right hand corner.
However, Leiston conceded just 90 seconds later when Simeon Maye dribbled into the box and set up Shaw who’s initial shot was well saved by Robinson but Maye followed up to net Bromsgrove’s third goal of the afternoon.
Leiston were not done though and Rayworth header home Sayer’s cross on 82 minutes to set up a tense finale. Rayworth was then denied by a great save from Breedon just two minutes later.
The Blues kept trying and in stoppage time, Sayer went close but shot over the bar and after winning a corner in the tenth minute of stoppage time, the ball ended up in Breedon’s arms and the referee would blow for full time.
