Blues dealt cruel blow in stoppage time against run away leaders Kettering Town

Leiston went down to league leaders Kettering Town at the weekend, in a match sponsored by Marquis Motorhomes while Chris Ellins and Paul Andrews sponsored the match ball.

Byron Lawrence and Robert Eagle came back into the starting eleven for the game as Josh Cheetham and Matt Rutterford dropped to the bench.

Leiston started quite brightly and Seb Dunbar got down the left to deliver a good ball into the box but away keeper Paul White was down to collect and gather whilst under pressure from Matt Blake. Kettering had their first chance as the Blues lost possession and a couple of passes later the ‘Poppies’ were in on goal but Marcus Garnham saved with his legs to deny Aaron O’Connor. Both teams found it hard to create any real clear cut chances. Rob Eagle released Dominic Docherty who got away from his marker but he shot high and wide. Lindon Meikle and Dan Holman were both off target with attempts outside the penalty area while Declan Towers headed wide of Marcus Garnham’s right hand post from a corner. A good move down Leiston’s left enabled Gary Stohrer to get a shot away and he curled just over. Tom Bullard then did well to block Dan Holman’s effort before Seb Dunbar struck over White’s upright. Rob Eagle passed through to Seb Dunbar shortly later but he steered the ball just wide of the post in the last meaningful action of the half.

Three minutes into the second period and Dominic Docherty got in on goal but shot wide of White’s right hand post. Kyle Hammond then played the ball to Noel Aitkens and he hit on the half volley but it was straight at White. Leiston were restricting Kettering to long shots mainly and it was Hammond once again for Leiston who whipped in a ball from the left and Matt Blake poked the ball wide from just six yards. At the other end, Holman fired just wide but chances were hard to come by for both sides as the game started to near the end. Both defences were on top and midfields were finding it hard to get in behind the back lines. As the match moved into the fourth minute of stoppage time, Kettering unleashed a ball from the right hand side and the ball broke to Aaron O’Connor who struck past Garnham to give the keeper no chance. Before play restarted, Noel Aitkens was given a second yellow card and the away side held out to go within one win of the league title.

Leiston now make the long trip to Alvechurch on Tuesday before travelling to Barwell at the weekend.
