Leiston head to Oxfordshire tomorrow evening with two back to back victories to their name after good victories over St Ives Town and Barwell in the last week. They will though face a stiff test in the form of Banbury who have yet to taste defeat in any competition this season.
The Blues played at Banbury United in August 2018, losing 1-0, in what is to date their only visit to The Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium. Leiston have drawn 0-0 (April 2019 in which Charlie Beckwith made a penalty save late on) and lost 5-1 (November 2019, Jerry Kamanzi the Blues scorer) to Banbury at home in the only other contests between the teams in their history.
The Blues have won 5 of their last 6 league matches now while Banbury have 23 points from their 9 league games to date so far, winning 7 and drawing 2. Banbury defeated Bath City of the National South on Saturday 1-0 to reach the Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper for the second year in a row. They lost 2-1 to Canvey Island last season, while they have drawn Barrow at home in this year’s First Round.
Will Davies scored his 7th goal of the campaign at the weekend (all in the league). Darren Eadie and Chris Wigger might have Jamie Eaton-Collins back for the match but Adam Bailey-Dennis is definitely out and will serve his last match of a three game ban.
A win would mean the Blues would go into the play-offs tomorrow night, with Tamworth (involved in an FA Cup Replay) and Hednesford Town not playing.
Blues boss Chris Wigger said on Monday afternoon: - ‘Getting back to consecutive wins was a really good feeling on Saturday. I think we played some of the best football we’ve played so far whilst also competing really well. The lads played with a real freedom in possession and that’s something we actively encourage. There were lots of positives to take from the last 2 games leading into a very difficult away fixture on Tuesday evening. Banbury have had a great start to the season and we know the strength in their team is exceptional. We are under no illusions of the magnitude of the task ahead on Tuesday evening.’
