Leiston recorded a fine 3-1 win at Tamworth yesterday to move up to 6th in the league table, in front of 513 spectators at the Lamb Ground in Staffordshire.
Jamie Eaton-Collins was still out injured as Darren Eadie and Chris Wigger kept the same side as Tuesday night against Banbury United. Adam Bailey-Dennis came back into the squad after serving his three match ban for a red card.
The match began at a fast pace as Joe Marsden’s early corner was taken by Jasbir Singh. The home keeper then quickly turned defence into attack and Henri Wilder forced Sam Donkin into his first save. Dylan Switters went down but after some treatment was able to carry on and on 6 minutes the midfielder shot just wide. However, Leiston, who were playing in all yellow on the day, took the lead on 9 minutes. Sam Donkin’s long diagonal ball found Seb Dunbar who brought the ball down superbly and then crossed from the left to find Will Davies who slotted past Singh. Dunbar shot over as Leiston pressed once more while at the other end, Jack Concannon fired at Donkin. Leiston were passing the ball around in midfield well, with Saunders and Quantrell both doing an excellent job. Just after the half hour mark, Adam Mills was denied by Singh but just three minutes later, the second goal came. A mistake in the home defence enabled Will Davies to square to Mills who seized up the opportunity to smash home via a slight deflection and the underside of the crossbar. Late in the half, Michael Taylor’s effort was deflected over the bar by Siju Odelusi and in the last kick of the first period, Singh was forced into another good save by Joe Marsden.
Tamworth introduced two substitutes at half time while Leiston brought off Dylan Switters who was struggling with his ankle to replace him with Brendan Ocran. Orrin Pendleton forced Donkin into a smart stop from a free kick but Leiston were still in control of the game. Ryan Beswick had a free kick that went just over, while at the other end Mills couldn’t get on the end of a Finlay Barnes cross and Joe Marsden shot over after a corner. Sam Donkin produced a superb save from Tyrell Waite after the hour mark but Tamworth pulled a goal back when Shaquille McDonald finished off a rebound after Donkin had first saved. The game was now end to end with Leiston defending well from corners whilst also breaking well at the other end. Orrin Pendley gave away a penalty with just over ten minutes to go, after Jasbir Singh had punched away an swinging corner, and this proved to be the final nail in the coffin as the defender handled the resultant shot back in, and Will Davies duly obliged from the spot, placing the ball into the bottom right hand corner, with the ball going under Singh. Late on, Tamworth had two penalty appeals of their own that were waved away by the referee, while Donkin made two more superb saves, although the keeper was booked for time wasting. On 87 minutes, Mills couldn’t get enough on his shot from a Joe Marsden ball but it didn’t matter as the Blues deservedly took the points back to Suffolk.
