The Blues head to Crown Meadow for a local derby tomorrow afternoon as the side look for a victory after going five matches in all competitions without a win.
The Blues won the fixture at Leiston on August Bank Holiday after coming from two goals down to eventually win 4-2. George Quantrell, Seb Dunbar, Adam Mills and Jamie Eaton-Collins all netted on the day. Results lately have been hard to take, but the Blues still remain 8th in the league standings. Lowestoft, meanwhile, are in 19th place and have 19 points from their 21 league games thus far.
They haven’t played since Saturday 4th December, when they defeated Stratford Town 2-1 in the Midlands.
Leiston have won their last three meetings against the Trawlerboys at Crown Meadow. In August 2017, an own goal and Joe Marsden long range effort saw the side win 2-0 while in December 2018, Jake Reed and Matt Blake were on target in a 2-1 win after falling a goal behind. A year later in 2019, Leiston again trailed but John Sands, Tom Debenham and Rhys Henry were all on the scoresheet which saw Leiston come back and win 3-1. Leiston also won at Crown Meadow in March 2018 in the Suffolk Premier Cup semi-final by defeating Kirkley & Pakefield 3-1. Kirkley took the lead in the opening minute but Leiston fought back and goals from Christy Finch (2) and Jake Reed saw them into the final. Other memorable games in previous years saw Jamie Stannard sent off after just two minutes in September 2008 for handling the ball outside the area. Danny Cunningham gave the Blues the lead that evening, however, Lowestoft went on to win 2-1. The Blues enjoyed a 2-0 win in the league cup the same season and also won 4-1 in October 2013 in the league cup at Crown Meadow.
Blues joint boss Chris Wigger said on Sunday afternoon: -
‘I think we all know the importance of a traditional festive local derby. I think Monday’s game will definitely be full blooded! Our boys know the importance of building on the impressive 1st half in our last game against Stratford Town. That is the brightest we have started all season and we will need to better that in order to get ourselves a foot hold in this derby. Lowestoft came out of the blocks at a very good pace in the home fixture and we were fortunate to get back into the game. I feel we are on a better course now and we have had an opportunity to work on some things in training which I feel will put us in a much stronger position as a group. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there and please stay safe.‘
