The Blues entertain Hitchin Town tomorrow afternoon as they try to get back to winning ways in league action.
A win in the week saw the side defeat Brantham Athletic 3-0, with goals coming from Adam Mills, Finlay Barnes and Jake Hutchings and progress to the quarter-finals of the Turners Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup where they will visit Mildenhall Town. Barnes’ goal on Tuesday takes him level with Will Davies on 15 for the season, while Adam Mills has 12 goals now. Leiston remain 7th in the table in what is a very tight league.
Hitchin won 1-0 against Biggleswade Town last weekend and drew 1-1 with Tamworth last Monday. They are 19th currently with 28 points from 30 matches. Earlier in the campaign, Leiston won 3-1 at Hitchin Town in the FA Trophy thanks to goals from Ben Hunter, Brendan Ocran and Siju Odelusi. Just nine days later, the two side met again in Hertfordshire in the league and went down 4-1, with Adam Mills netting the solitary goal.
Leiston lost to Hitchin at home in January 2019 (Hitchin’s first visit to Suffolk) with Harrison Bacon on target in a 2-1 loss but in October 2019, the following season, Will Davies, Siju Odelusi and Josh Hitter were all on target in a 3-1 home win.
Baris Altintop should return to the squad tomorrow after missing out with a niggle against Brantham. There will be a minute’s silence before the game in memory of supporter David Whitehouse who sadly passed away recently. Everyone at the club send their condolences to David’s friends and family.
Blues joint boss Chris Wigger said on Friday: -
‘The conditions made Tuesday’s cup game a very difficult affair, having said that we created some great chances and scored some excellent team goals. Onto league action Saturday where we entertain Hitchin. The third time we have played them this season. Honours are shared at the moment so both teams will be desperate to get the win. For us, a chance to get a league game in at home is crucial. I will certainly be making my point to the lads on how important it is to build on Tuesday’s win and to try and gain some momentum going into two away fixtures in the upcoming weeks.‘
