Leiston welcome Coalville Town to Suffolk tomorrow afternoon in league action, a side having an excellent season thus far, sitting in second place and guaranteed of a play-off place. Coalville have lost just six matches in their 32 league games to date and beat Leiston 4-1 earlier in the season. Kai Fletcher netted his debut goal in a hard afternoon at the office for the Blues.
Coalville is a game in the 2008 FA Cup run often not thought of like Carshalton, Lewes, or along with the efforts against Fleetwood Town, but a game that was superbly fought in by both teams. Stuart Boardley’s penalty just before the half hour mark was put away by the midfielder but Coalville missed a penalty of their own (over the bar) and Leiston defended valiantly in a second half that seemed to go on an age.
Three years later in 2011, Coalville got revenge in an FA Vase quarter-final tie that the Leicestershire side won 1-0 with Neil Calver receiving a second yellow card as the Blues ended with ten men.
At Step 3, Leiston have won one and drew one at home to Coalville (2-0 and 1-1), whilst drawing two and losing one away from home (2-2, 1-1, 1-4).
Leiston are seven points off the play-offs and head to 5th placed AFC Rushden & Diamonds next weekend. The Blues do boost a good home record with just three defeats in 16 league games this season.
Blues joint boss Chris Wigger said on Thursday evening: -
‘After a disappointing result last Saturday at Stratford Town it was nice to put that behind us with a win against Mildenhall Town on Tuesday night to take us into the semi final of the Suffolk Premier Cup, which although is a fantastic achievement it means nothing if we don’t reach the final. Nobody remembers a losing semi finalist! As the games come thick and fast that brings us onto Saturday’s game against Coalville Town. They are a team that I have to say I’ve felt are the best we have come up against in our last two seasons. The lads know this and will be well up for the challenge. Personally, I’m looking for a bit of bite and for us to come out fighting!’
