Reserves progress in Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup to play Stowmarket in the next round after a good win against Debenham LC

Leiston Reserves progressed to the Second Round of the Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening after a convincing 6-3 win over Debenham LC. They will play away at Stowmarket Town in the next round.

The Reserves started off well, and they took the lead after just seven minutes when good play by Albert Serra Parrondo and Charlie Canham allowed HARRISON BACON to get in behind the Debenham back line and he finished well past Bailey Fairweather in the away goal. Albert Serra Parrondo’s free kick just went over at an angle while James Watling had a shot that was easy for Joe Potter in the Blues goal. A good break away from Leiston saw Callum Pearce drive away down the left and centre to Tom Leuenberger who smashed the top of the Debenham LC crossbar, with Harrison Bacon putting in the loose ball but the referee deemed that he handled the ball first. Debenham did equalise on 33 minutes as JAMES WATLING got in to finish well past Potter. But the Reserves regained the lead just four minutes later as HARRISON BACON curled home on the edge of the penalty area into Fairweather’s bottom left hand corner. Leiston continued to press for another goal just before the break but there were to be no further goals.

The ‘Hornets’ began the second period well and forced Potter into two good early saves in the first two minutes of the half, the second a good dive to his left. But for all Debenham’s pressure, it was the Blues who would score the next goal as a great run into the area by NICKY SHOPOV beat Fairweather and went in off his left hand post. However, the lead was cut by one just two minutes later as HARRY BROWN finished well in the box. Leiston though went again and good play down the left again allowed sub Drew Connick to net his first goal for the Reserves. Potter was down to his right to save a Brown volley as the visitors never gave up, but Leiston made it 5-2 when HARRISON BACON brilliantly fired in from distance to net his hat-trick. Both sides continued to play some good football but it was Leiston who got their sixth goal in the 87th minute. Drew Connick’s delivery from the right enabled GRANT OVERETT to get in the box to head past Fairweather. Potter had to make a great double save for Leiston from sub Andrew Crowe, but from the resultant ball into the box, SAM LAST headed home. That completed the scoring in a decent match. The Reserves can now look forward to to weekend as they travel to Kings Lynn Town Reserves in the league.
