The Blues U23’s head to Long Melford tonight in the Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup 2nd Round.

Bir side received a BYE in Round 1 will be joined by other winners in Round 2 and also the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division sides.

The U23s moved off the foot of the table on Saturday afternoon after winning 2-0 at Bloomfields against Needham Market Reserves.

Long Melford sit in 16th place at present, having taken six points from their first six games, but they did beat Whittlesey Athletic at the weekend 2-1.

The Blues first team last played Long Melford in the 2003/2004 campaign.

The teams drew 0-0 on Tuesday, 9th September 2003 while in the return fixture, the Blues won 2-1 on Tuesday, 9th March 2004, with Carl Chenery and an own goal by the hosts the scorers. D.Hill scored for Long Melford.

The Blues U23’s played Long Melford as a Reserve side in September 2014, with Long Melford winning 3-2. Kieran Nicholls and Joshua Merritt scored for the Blues while Samuel Bayliss, Steven Chisholm and Jack Durey netted for the away team.

Long Melford won 1-0 in the reverse game in March 2015, with Sean Bartlett scoring for Long Melford.

That was the last time the sides have met as Long Melford have been playing in the Eastern Counties Premier Division.

Leiston’s second string have only played in the League Challenge Cup three previous season, winning only two games.

They beat Woodbridge Town 1-0 in 2014 before going out to Felixstowe & Walton United the following round.

The next season, 2015/2016, the Blues beat Needham Market Reserves 3-1 at Bloomfields before going out at Norwich United, 3-1.

Leiston lost 4-0 at Gorleston in their first game of the 2016/2017 season, their first game of the season.
