The U23s entertained newcomers, Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers, for their
second home game of the week having lost narrowly by the odd goal in five to
Needham Market U23s on Tuesday night. Cameron Young and Jake Spooner
being on target.
It was clear from the outset that there was only one team who were prepared
to try to play a passing game. The visitors approach was to attempt to put long
balls over the home defence for their strikers to run on to. For the most part
the young defenders dealt well with this style of play. Going forward the U23s
kept possession well but lacked the decisive final pass. On the one occasion
when they found the right pass Ollie Griggs was denied by a foul which
resulted in the award of a penalty that CHARLIE ATKIN confidently despatched.
Half Time: Leiston U23 1 – 0 Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers
The second half saw the Rovers continue in much the same vein, only looking
dangerous from set pieces. Indeed it was from a corner that the failure to clear
the ball allowed the visitors to equalise. The response was almost immediate
with Joe McNeil making an excellent run down the left flank and cross across
the six yard box which was met at the far post by MacKENZIE TRAVIS to tap
over the line. OLLIE GRIGGS increased the lead when he was played through
and calmly slotted past the visiting goalkeeper. A second goal for Dussindale
from another corner meant a nervy end to the game but the young U23s saw it
out to record their first league win of the season.
Full Time: Leiston U23 3 – 2 Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers
The win moved the U23s off the bottom of the league table and out of the
relegation places.
