Leiston U23’s kept their winning streak going as they made it three wins in a row at the weekend, writes NEIL SMYE.
The Blues U23’s started the game strong and on the front foot. The attacking play was causing the visitors defence problems with chances being created. Manley forced the away custodian into three saves before Mackenzie Travis opened the scoring for his 3rd goal of the season. Leiston continued to press forward with fullbacks Young and Rayworth causing havoc down both flanks with the later forcing a good save from the visiting goalkeeper.
After good approach play, Warren Buckman found himself 20 yards out, who worked a shooting opportunity and bent a low shot out of the reach of the Whittlesey keeper into the bottom corner for his second goal in the last two games.
Travis had a goal disallowed with a tight offside decision after good work by Rayworth and Manley down the right flank.
Further chances were created but not taken, but from one of the resulting corners, Elliott Young rose highest to crash a header against the bar but reacted quickest to smash home the rebound to make it 3-0 for Leiston.
But for some good saves and erratic finishing the score could have been more than 3-0 at the break, but it was an impressive attacking display from the young Leiston team.
The visitors, with nothing to lose came at Leiston in the second half and pulled a goal back fifteen minutes in. The game had become scrappy and very transitional with Whittlesey’s direct approach and Leiston unable to retain possession as well as in the first half, the visitors scored a second to bring the score to 3-2.
Fresh legs were sent on by Leiston in the form of Shannon and Parlett, given Leiston more energy and allowing them to start to regain control of the game.
Shannon missed a good chance to finish the game as a contest off by bringing a save out of the goalkeeper.
Further chances were created before Rayworth, after a jinking run from just inside the attacking half evading four tackles found his way into the box to score a great individual goal, Leiston’s fourth of the day and Raworths second in two games.
Parlett almost rounded the goalkeeper, Shannon fired wide and Ellis fired over from a good move with Leiston finishing the game as strongly as they started.
So a successful seven days for the young U23’s with three wins from the last three games with ten goals scored.
