Blues defeat Seasiders in good display at Victory Road

Leiston Reserves defeated Felixstowe & Walton Reserves on a good night for football at Victory Road on Tuesday evening.

The Blues started the game well and created a couple of early openings while the ‘Seasiders’ looked dangerous on the counter attack. Leiston took the lead in the 19th minute when a cross from Louie Bloom found its way to Owen Hammond and he scored past away keeper John Steele. Just four minutes later and the Reserves doubled their lead as a corner into the penalty area lead to a goal mouth scramble and although Felixstowe thought they had cleared their lines, Josh Cheetham had other ideas and striked the ball into Steele’s bottom left hand corner. Shortly after the restart and Michael Carrigan tried his luck on the edge of the area but Steele parried his effort away for a corner. However the Reserves did score a third goal when good play down the left flank enabled a cross delivered to Callum Pearce and he converted past Steele. Owen Hammond had a shot saved by the away custodian and Reumel Codrington headed wide before Felixstowe were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute as Sam Allen was alledged to have fouled in the box and Henry Barley tucked home the spot kick.

Eight minutes into the second half and Leiston scored a fourth goal. Bloom was denied by an inspired Steele but the ball was cleared only to Charlie Canham and he made no mistake, lashing home past Steele into the keeper’s bottom left hand corner. Both teams began to make subs and Hammond could have scored another goal but he dragged his attempt wide of the post. Josh Cheetham’s free kick was parried away by Steele to his right but Leiston scored with their next passage of play as Owen Hammond netted well again to score the Reserves fifth goal. Hammond was put through on goal after the restart and lobbed Steele but this time to flag was up for offside. Felixstowe hit the post as full time neared but there was still time for Leiston to grab a sixth goal as Toby Groom tackled well to break up play and feed Hammond who finished well again, this time just lifting the ball over Steele to score his hat-trick. Mason Sinclair and Louie Bloom were denied by Steele and sub Ashley Rankin somehow put over the bar when through one on one with Joe Potter. The last action of the game saw Bloom thwarted by the legs of Steele but it didn’t matter as the Reserves were worthy winners on the night. Credit also to Felixstowe who tried to play the right way until the end.

The Reserves head to Fakenham Town on Saturday, kicking off at 2 o’clock.
