Blues defeat Haverhill as they climb back up to 12th in the league table

Leiston Reserves completed the double over Haverhill Borough in a keenly contested match at Victory Road on Tuesday evening.

The match started evenly but it was Leiston who had the first real chance when Nicky Shopov forced away keeper Mitchell Ware to push the ball onto the crossbar after he struck a good shot. Shopov did really well on the left flank moments later and sent in a cross that Jourdan Kiwomya headed onto the roof of the net. Louie Bloom tried his luck from distance for Leiston but it went over the bar. Joe Potter denied Craig Pruden as Haverhill had their first shot on target and Potter saved well again from Pruden once more as the away side had a good spell. Louie Bloom put the hosts in front with an excellent turn and finish into the roof of the net in the penalty area with six minutes to go before half time, but just three minutes later, Craig Pruden finished well to level for Haverhill Borough.

Haverhill had a great chance to go into the lead just thirty seconds into the second half but Rory Bone blazed high and wide of Joe Potter’s goal. Charlie Canham headed against the post from a corner but the Blues then lost their way for a period and Haverhill showed what a dangerous side they are as they passed the ball around well. From a ball into the area in the 69th minute, Leiston didn’t defend it well enough and Lewis Lindsay finished into Joe Potter’s bottom right hand corner. The goal seemed to fire Leiston into life and they applied some strong pressure themselves. The leveller came with eleven minutes of normal time remaining, a good piece of play by Toby Groom saw him cross from the right hand side with the outside of his right boot for Will Davies to head home past Ware. In the 86th minute, Will Davies headed in once again, with credit going to the six or seven players who were involved in the move. Sub Callum Pearce had a header go over while Davies was denied a hat-trick when Ware made a good block and Davies’ follow up was cleared off the line. However the team held on to take all the points. They host March Town United on Saturday at Victory Road in their next match.
