LAST week we saw a rarity at the LWAA, I mean LTAA, oops no, I mean the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium (I can never get it right). It was a game of no goals!
I don’t mean the tall things at either end for teams to shoot at, but the fact nobody could stick the ball into the net. Neither the Blues, nor Bromsgrove Sporting.
I was in Platt’s the greengrocers on Tuesday morning and some bloke buying two pounds of Artichokes, who had been at the game, reckoned that it had been about five years since that last happened in a first-team match at home.
Well, you know me! Or if you don't, you're starting to get the idea.
I didn’t trust that little stat one bit, so off I went to my favourite haunt, the local library. I took a flask as I thought I would have to be in there a while even though they are open until 7.30 pm on Tuesdays. But, I needn’t have bothered as I found what I was looking for in 26 minutes!
The last goalless draw involving the first team at home was only back in August last year. I duly marched back to Platt's and told the guy who had brazenly thrown out the stat and who was now burying his head in some Maris Pipers. You should have seen his face!
On the theme of 0-0 draws or close games, I always worry when I’m at a game when I need to visit the facilities (its my age) and that I might miss a goal.
I do my best to wait between halves as I've always had this fear that I'll miss the only goal of the game. You often see it on the TV, near the end of games as streams of people head for the exits to get a quick getaway and then panic as goals fly in, in stoppage time.
Well, I'll wager there were a few fans who missed some goals in the game I'm about to tell you about.
Last week a match in the North East saw an amazing turnaround. Yarm & Eaglescliffe, barely two years members of the Northern League Division Two, were 5-2 down at Sunderland West End with the 90 minutes up.
The hosts were cruising when suddenly enter, Tom Atkinson (gas engineer by trade, and Yarm hot shot) who, in seven minutes smashed home four goals! Yes, FOUR! All in injury-time, as Yarm ran out 6-5 victors!
What a game, what a fight back. And so it proves….never league a game early.
