Wigger hoping Blues can keep the goals coming

But Royston will provide another fierce test, says Leiston boss

'The group are scoring and that’s a big positive and the overall performances are certainly good.'
- Chris Wigger

BLUES boss Chris Wigger is hoping his free-scoring Blues can get back to winning ways at home to Royston Town at the Flannery Stadium on Saturday afternoon, 3pm kick-off.

The Blues have picked up just two points from their last three league games, a run that has stalled their play-off push.

However, Wigger remains positive, especially when the attacking end of the field has been scoring goals for fun in recent weeks – nine in the last four games – with Ben Fowkes leading the charge. Fowkes has now netted 14 so far this season.

“Yes, we’re scoring goals, which is good,” Wigger said.

“However, we needed three against Alvechurch to get a point and we scored two at Harborough and got nothing.

“But the group are scoring and that’s a big positive and the overall performances are certainly good. Yes, Ben Fowkes is on fire. I think the lads have a confidence in Ben that if we get him in positions one-on-one, he’s going to score, or create a save, or something is going to happen.

“That puts Ben’s own self-confidence in a good place, and I think he now wants to score goal after goal, something he’s very capable of.”

Leiston are five points off the play-off picture now and will want nothing less than a win on Saturday against a Royston Town side who sit bottom of the Southern League Premier Division Central table.

Wigger knows Royston will provide another tough test though, just as relegation-scrapping Stourbridge and Alvechurch did recently when they came to Suffolk in back-to-back home clashes with the Blues. Both games finished in draws.

“Royston are going to be fighting for every point, the position they are in the table,” Wigger said. “They have a physicality about them and certainly won’t come to Leiston and lie down.

“So, we know what to expect. If we keep our performance levels high, we will get results.”

Leiston head to Bury Town on Tuesday night in a re-arranged league clash for the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
