Wigger praise for Blues defender Kyran after fine Sporting victory

Leiston boss reflects on a fine team performance and cites Clements' contribution

'He just gets in people’s faces, he gets across defenders, he’s a handful, he battles with them physically because he has that presence and that makes things happen.'
- Chris Wigger

BLUES boss, Chris Wigger, has heaped praise on centre back Kyran Clements who notched the winning goal at Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday.

Clements, who joined the Blues back in the summer, was previously at Victory Road in the 2019/20 season. He has made a career habit of scoring vital goals for clubs he has played for, and since re-joining the Blues, he has done the same.

Having notched a crucial equaliser against Hornchurch earlier in the season in the FA Cup in the last minute to force a replay which the Blues went on to win – and then drawing Dagenham & Redbridge in the next round – Clements was at it again at Bromsgrove.

“Kyran has scored some important goals, and I think it’s important to mention that,” Wigger said.

“He’s a centre back who can also play centrally as a 9 because he knows how to be a handful. He literally goes into that position and thinks, ‘what don’t I like to defend against?’.

“And he just gets in people’s faces, he gets across defenders, he’s a handful, he battles with them physically because he has that presence and that makes things happen in and around him. To be fair, he’s absolutely delivered for us on every occasion.”

Wigger was left delighted with his team’s win on Saturday against a Sporting side who were unbeaten in their last seven games.

“It was an excellent result, probably call it a ‘polished away performance’,” the Blues boss added.

“I don’t think our football on the whole was as good as it has been in some of the games, but I think we went about the task with a little bit of steel and a little bit of guile, with Bromsgrove being unbeaten in seven and on a bit of an uplift since signing some very experienced players at the level.

“They immediately tried to put us under pressure, and they tried to pin us in and tactically we decided where we were going to defend from and that worked really well for us.

“With 10/15 minutes to go, I looked across at Lee (Norfolk) and Ryan (Jarvis) and said, I’d probably take an away point. We had a few spells when we controlled possession in the second half, then they had a 10-minute flurry towards the end.

“We probably scored against the run of play when they were probably dominating. It was a well-earned corner which we got on the break, an excellent delivery from Fraser (Alexander) and Kyran steps up to head it in. I think Cameron Rayworth was just behind him and had leapt and cleared their defence as well and would have put it in.”

The Blues are up to ninth in the table and entertain Hitchin Town at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium on Saturday.
