Leiston joint boss Chris Wigger won’t be taking Ipswich Wanderers lightly when the two sides clash at Victory Road on Tuesday night in the Suffolk Premier Cup, last eight.
Wanderers head to Leiston in excellent form and on the back of a tremendous come-from-behind victory over Thetford on Saturday – a 3-2 win that saw the Ipswich side leapfrog Thetford at the top of the Thurlow Nunn Premier division table.
And while there may be two Steps between Southern League Leiston and Eastern Counties League Wanderers, Wigger knows this is no game for his side to go easy on.
MORE: Why non-league day was so important
“We have to take the game very seriously,” Wigger said.
“Wanderers are on the back of a great win on Saturday, a title decider in some ways, although I know there is a long way to go, but it was paramount to both clubs’ seasons.
“So, they will come to us buoyant, and why not? They have some quality players and we know that.
“We will have to be on it. Yes, it’s a chance for us to mix the squad up a bit, give players who haven’t had so many minutes some time, as we look towards the play-offs where we need all our squad ready for that run-in.
“But you get to this stage of a competition like the Premier Cup, you must want it, being one stage from the semis. Leiston have always taken the Premier Cup seriously and we continue to do so, despite our push for the play-offs."
It’s a busy week for Wigger’s side. This Saturday, Leiston’s push for a play-off place in the Southern League Central Premier Division continues as fourth-placed Rushall Olympic visit Victory Road. Leiston are currently third.
“It’s a huge week for us. Wanderers, followed by Rushall,” Wigger added.
“There was a bit of needle last time we played at Rushall, so it will be an interesting game.”
Tuesday’s game against Wanderers kicks off at 7.45pm at Victory Road. The winners face Needham Market in the semi-final. The other semi-final tie is between Bury Town and Stowmarket Town.
