Will Davies is on 29 goals so far this season. But what number would he like to get to?

'I just wanted to beat my total goals of last season, which was 19. So to be on 29 with about nine or ten games to go is great.'

LEISTON hot-shot Will Davies is determined to keep finding the net as the Blues go in pursuit of Step 2 football.

Davies, 23, has banged in 29 goals so far this season for the Victory Road club, who find themselves third in the Southern League Central Premier Division, with a play-off place as good as guaranteed.

It’s been an outstanding season for Davies, and he hopes to keep his goalscoring feats going as Leiston keep up their promotion tilt at AFC Rushden & Diamonds this weekend.

“It’s been a good season so far for me and obviously the team,” he said.

“To be honest I just wanted to beat my total goals of last season, which was 19. So to be on 29 with about nine or ten games to go is great, it would be great to do 40. It’s doable.”

Davies netted twice more this week, including the winner against Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday and the equaliser at Stratford on Tuesday night.

Tamworth (73pts.) and Coalville (72pts.) lead the way at the top of the table, with Leiston, on the same points as Coalville, but having played three games more. Promotion to Step 2 is still a real possibility, so how does Davies view it?

“We would want it,” he said. “With the aspirations the club has, I think everyone involved wants to go up this year.

“And we have the team strength to do it.”

Leiston head to basement dwellers, AFC Rushden & Diamonds this weekend, the Northamptonshire club enduring a difficult season finding themselves 23 points off safety.

Not that there are any easy games at Step 3, as Davies knows.

“They will be hard to break down, they are battling to survive,” Davies said.

“No game at this level guarantees points, so we will have to go and put on a good performance and see where it gets us.”

Leiston’s season is boiling up. They entertain high-flying Thurlow Nunn Premier side Ipswich Wanderers in the quarter-finals of the Suffolk Premier Cup next Tuesday, at Victory Road.

Both teams will be looking for a semi-final spot, where the winners will play Needham Market. In the other semi, Bury play Stowmarket.
