THE BLUES will be looking to move into the Fourth Round Qualifying of the FA Cup this weekend – for the second time in three seasons.
Leiston entertain Coventry United (3pm kick-off) at the Flannery Stadium on Saturday, in a Third Round Qualifying clash, and in a game both sides will be keen to win, with almost £6,000 up for grabs for the winners and, more importantly, the chance of a big tie with a National League club in the next round.
Two seasons ago the Blues met Dagenham & Redbridge at the Fourth Round Qualifying stage, losing 1-5 at home on what was a big occasion for the club, and Leiston boss Chris Wigger knows the importance of the tie with Coventry.
“The FA Cup is a competition that brings real excitement,” he said.
“Anyone who is a football fan and is involved in the FA Cup is involved in something that they have got to appreciate because it has such a great feel about it.
“And of course, we all understand the financial implications that a good run in this competition for clubs like us can bring. A manager at any level understands the pressures of wanting to bring some much-needed income into the football club.
“We know it is going to be tough game against Coventry United. They had a great result against Hednesford in the last round. We know all about Hednesford from our battles with them in the past, so we know what a terrific result that was for them.
“But we’re at home and this is a game we must be confident about going into.”
Leiston have so far knocked out Grays and Hitchin Town, while Coventry, who play a Step below Leiston, have beaten Sutton Coldfield, Whitchurch Alport, Bedworth United and most impressively, Step 2 Hednesford.
The Blues hope to have Eddie Jackson back in their starting line-up after illness and a knee niggle, while Adam Mills continued his fine goalscoring form at league leaders, Real Bedford, on Tuesday night. Despite the Blues losing 2-3 to a last-minute penalty, Mills notched another goal – his 50th for the Blues.
